The clocks are going back, the evenings are drawing in and there’s definitely a chill in the Derbyshire air. But while plenty of attractions are winding down for winter, we’re very much still here!
In fact, we thought it was about time we popped up to say hello, remind you what we’re up to and, most importantly, let you know that there’s still plenty going on at Great British Car Journey throughout the autumn and winter months.

A Great Day Out in Derbyshire, Whatever the Weather!
Let’s face it, British weather isn’t always on our side. But thankfully, that’s never been much of a problem here at Great British Car Journey!
With over 150 classic British cars under one roof, our museum in Ambergate, Derbyshire, makes a rather good escape from the wind, rain and whatever else the British autumn decides to throw at us.
From the humble Austin Seven to the much-loved Morris Minor, the iconic Mini and plenty of other familiar faces from Britain’s motoring past, there’s an awful lot to discover.
And we’re not just talking about looking at old cars, either.
Every car has a story to tell, and our interactive audio guides take you on a journey through decades of British motoring history, with plenty of fascinating tales, forgotten favourites and perhaps a few memories of cars you once owned yourself.
Whether you’re a lifelong petrolhead or couldn’t tell an Austin from a Morris, there’s something rather special about seeing these cars together.
Our Winter Opening Hours Are Here!
With the clocks changing on Sunday 25th October, we’re making a little change to our opening hours too. From Sunday 25th October, we’ll be open from 10am until 4pm, with last museum admission at 2pm.
So, there’s still plenty of time to come and see us, enjoy a leisurely wander around the collection and perhaps stop for something tasty in our Filling Station Café while you’re here. We’re not packing the cars away for winter, and we certainly don’t expect you to stay at home either!
Calling All Locals… You Don’t Have to Visit the Museum to Visit Us!
Here’s something we think more people should know about.
Our Filling Station Café is open to everyone, Monday to Friday, without the need to purchase a museum admission ticket.
So, if you’re local to Ambergate, Belper, Ripley, Matlock or anywhere in the surrounding Derbyshire area, why not make us your next coffee stop?
Whether it’s a catch-up with friends, a spot of lunch, a coffee after a walk or simply an excuse to get out of the house, we’d love to see you.
With home-cooked food, hot drinks, cakes and a warm welcome waiting, you don’t need to be a classic car enthusiast to enjoy a visit.
And if you’ve never been before, you might just find yourself wondering why you haven’t popped in sooner!
Kids Go Free Until 30th October!
Still looking for things to do with the kids this October half-term? Well, we’ve got a little something to help!
Kids Go Free at Great British Car Journey until Friday 30th October, making it a great opportunity to enjoy a family day out in Derbyshire without breaking the bank.
There’s plenty to keep younger visitors entertained, including our children’s interactive audio guides, quizzes, games and our popular Number Plate Hunt. And for those who fancy a little extra adventure, we’ve also got our Mini Land Rover Adventure and Hot Wheels Riverside Raceway, subject to availability and weather conditions.
So, if you’re searching for an indoor family attraction in Derbyshire, somewhere to take the grandchildren or simply a rainy-day activity that everyone can enjoy, you know where we are!

Of course, there’s another rather special reason to visit us.
Our Drive Dad’s Car experiences give you the opportunity to do something you won’t find at your average museum – actually get behind the wheel of a classic car!
From the Ford Capri and classic Mini to the Reliant Robin and Rolls-Royce, we’ve got a fantastic selection of cars waiting to be driven.

There’s Still Plenty Going On!
Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean our events calendar has gone quiet.
We’ve got some lovely events coming up, including our Halloween Great British Car Meet on Friday 30th October, our Autojumble & Car Boot on Sunday 1st November, and our very first Christmas Makers Market on Sunday 29th November.
From classic cars and bargain hunting to Christmas shopping with some wonderful local independent businesses, there’s still plenty of reasons to put a date in the diary.

We know that once the summer holidays are over and the darker evenings arrive, it’s easy to assume that attractions like ours have closed their doors until spring.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
We’re still here in Ambergate, welcoming visitors, sharing stories, serving coffees and celebrating the cars that helped put Britain on the road.
