Great British Car Journey secures Autocar archive merchandise deal

We’re delighted to announce that Great British Car Journey has completed an agreement with Haymarket Media Group to reproduce images and articles from the Autocar archive, which spans more than 125 years of automotive history.

The deal, secured by the Derbyshire-based classic car visitor attraction, follows the digitisation of more than a million pages of Autocar magazine, which has been published since November 1895.

Great British Car Journey is the first organisation to be licensed to reproduce and sell images from the Autocar archive.

Autocar is one of the world’s oldest car magazines, and the weekly’s archive is made up of around 6000 magazines.

The images from the newly digitised archive will be reproduced on a range of on-demand wall art, including framed and unframed canvases and prints as well as metal plaques.

The images are all available to order in a range of sizes through Great British Car Journey’s new online store.

Great British Car Journey founder, Richard Usher has selected an initial 75 front covers, dating from 1925 to the mid-1960s. They feature a range of British marques and models that have either disappeared from, or are rarely seen on, UK roads, including the Austin Seven, Morris Minor and the classic Mini.

The selected front pages are mainly hand drawn colour illustrations. “They are stunning images and evocative of a bygone era,” said Richard.

The images are available in four different sizes and prices start from just £16.99 and can be viewed and purchased from here.

Great British Car Journey was opened to the public in May 2021. Its new online store and partnership with Haymarket represents an exciting new development for the business.

Richard said: “This is a tremendously exciting development for Great British Car Journey. We are excited by the opportunity to present the Autocar archive and to share it with other car enthusiasts.”

Rachael Prasher, Managing Director of Haymarket Automotive, added: “Day-to-day we inevitably tend to focus on our future, but we are incredibly proud of our past, and it makes perfect sense for us to partner with a company that understands the history of the brand and the industry so well.”

“Autocar front cover is famous as the billboard for car manufacturers who want to show their latest model to the motoring public. Many of the marques that appeared on the Autocar front covers can now be found within the visitor attraction.”

More Autocar covers will be offered for sale soon.

Richard explained: “We will be adding more Autocar covers to our online store in the future, however we were keen to get the store launched ahead of Christmas.”

The Autocar prints can be purchased online at https://greatbritishcarjourney.com/buy-merchandise/ or ordered within the giftshop at the Great British Car Journey.

Treat Mum like a Queen at Great British Car Journey on Mothers’ Day

It’s all about mums right now at Great British Car Journey.

The popular classic car visitor attraction has rebranded its driving experience to Drive Mum’s Car specially for Mother’s Day and is rolling out the red carpet and putting up the bunting for mums everywhere in celebration of Mothers’ Day

From the daily school run, ferrying to after school clubs and pick-ups from friends’ houses, mums behind the wheel have played a vital role in all our childhoods.

To ensure they get the recognition they deserve, Ambergate-based Great British Car Journey has created a very royal driving experience complete with red carpet, a glass of fizz and afternoon tea.

Mums can enjoy a chauffeur driven ride in either a Daimler V8 Long wheelbase Limo, the very same model the Queen used between 2001 – 2007 or a 1988 Daimler DS420 Limousine, the last car ever built of this model was presented to the Queen.

During the 10-minute chauffeur driven experience, mum will be treated to a glass of fizz in car and a cream tea in the café before enjoying the trip down memory lane through the Great British Car Journey.

The very special chauffeured driving experience is the brainwave of Great British Car Journey founder Richard Usher, who said: “I have some great memories of my mum driving my brother and me in her Mini Cooper. She was a great driver; far better than my father if the truth be told!

“I think it’s fair to say that mums do a lot of the ferrying around where children are concerned. This Mother’s Day I wanted to give them a break and offer something different and I think a drive in a luxury classic car without squabbling children on the back seat absolutely fits the bill.” It’s the perfect Mother’s Day gift.”

The special chauffeur-driven Mother’s Day Drive Mum’s Car experience costs just £35.

Mum can also take to the wheel herself and drive more than 30 other classic British cars, including the original Mini, on a private route at Great British Car Journey in Ambergate.

All drives include entrance to the Great British Car Journey classic car visitor attraction.

UK’s newest car club launched at Classic Motor Show

The UK’s newest classic car club was launched by Great British Car Journey at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show today (12 November).

The Great British Car Club celebrates diversity, welcoming enthusiasts of any old cars regardless of age, value or country of origin.

Richard Usher, founder and CEO of Great British Car Journey explained why he has launched the new club: “Having been a member of numerous clubs, I have noticed that younger enthusiasts and even oldies like me, have become less fixated on a single make and that enthusiasm for old cars now covers a very broad spectrum of makes and models and I wanted to create a club which represented this.”

As well as giving member unlimited visits access to the Great British Car Journey attraction and its facilities, membership of the new club aims to connect classic car enthusiasts through special events, newsletters and online forums as well as offering discounts on products and access to a specialist classic car insurer.

Richard added: “There are hundreds of excellent car clubs who are doing a great job encouraging interest in and the use of old cars, but we have the luxury of facilities at Great British Car Journey which we can put at our members’ disposal.”

Former CEO of McLaren, friend of Great British Car Journey and classic car enthusiast, Mike Flewitt has agreed to be Honorary President of Great British Car Club. Mike also opened the attraction in May earlier this year.

Annual membership of the club is from just £31.

Great British Car Journey can be found on stand 5-320 within the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) village at the Classic Motor Show.

As well as launching the new club, the stand will also host the attraction’s newest exhibit a 1905 Arrol-Johnston Dogcart. The latest acquisition at the attraction puts a century between the oldest car and the most recent classic car on display – a McLaren 650S.

As well as the undercover exhibition at Great British Car Journey, the attraction also offers visitors the opportunity to drive more than 30 classic cars on a private route as part of the Drive Dad’s Car experience.

Since opening in May, Great British Car Journey has proved a hit with classic car enthusiasts attracting 25,000 visitors. Both the attraction and Richard Usher have also been named as finalists in the Royal Automobile Club Historic Awards and The Historic Motoring Awards.

Richard added: “We are tremendously excited to be at the Classic Motor Show and are grateful to the Federation for helping us tell thousands more people about the Great British Car journey, Drive Dad’s Car and the brand new Great British Car Club.”
