Best Ways to Travel to the Peak District Without a Car (UK Guide)

Located at Derwent Works in Ambergate, on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the museum is well connected and makes a perfect day trip from many parts of the UK.

By Train

The nearest station is Ambergate railway station, which is about a 15 minute walk from the museum.

The station sits on the Derwent Valley Line, with regular services operated by East Midlands Railway. Trains run between Derby, Nottingham, and Matlock, making it easy to reach Ambergate from across the Midlands.

If you’re travelling from further afield, Derby station is the easiest place to change trains. Derby is a major rail hub with direct services from cities including London, Birmingham, Leeds, and Sheffield. From there, the train journey to Ambergate takes around 15 minutes.

Once you arrive at Ambergate station, simply exit the station and follow the A6 south towards Belper. The Great British Car Journey is around three quarters of a mile away, and the walk takes about 15 minutes along the pavement beside the road

By Bus

Alternatively, if you prefer not to walk, buses running along the A6 stop just a short distance from the museum.

Several bus routes run along the A6 road, which passes directly by the museum.

The TransPeak bus service runs between Derby and Matlock, stopping at Oakhurst Bus Stop, just 100 metres from the museum entrance.

This makes it very easy to combine a visit with a trip to other Derbyshire attractions along the Derwent Valley.
