“The car you always promised yourself” was the advertising slogan behind Ford’s coupe for the swinging 60s. Named after the impossibly romantic and exotic Italian island of Capri, the car combined racy fastback styling with proven mechanical components, creating an affordable dream machine for the everyday driver.
For many, the Capri was more than just a car – it was a ticket to freedom, individuality and style. Whether it was admired from the school gates or thundering past on a dual carriageway, the Capri became an icon of British motoring culture.
A Capri has always been available in our Drive Dad’s Car fleet, but until now it has only been in 1.6 Laser form – a great car, but very much the sensible younger sibling of the range. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that this has been joined by the legendary 2.8 Injection. With 160 very lively horses under the bonnet, this was the Capri that meant business. A true 130 mph performance coupe, it offered genuine pace and handling to match the looks. These cars weren’t just fast road machines either – they proved their worth on the racetrack, cementing the Capri’s reputation as a serious driver’s car and guaranteeing huge street cred to their lucky owners.
The 2.8 Injection represented the Capri at its peak, with fuel injection breathing new life into the familiar Cologne V6 and making it one of the fastest and most desirable Fords of its day. If the 1.6 Laser was the dreamer’s Capri, the 2.8i was the one you lusted after. For many enthusiasts, it still is.
Of course, Ford has recently launched a new Capri – but I’m afraid it doesn’t make my pulse race quite like my mum’s 1976 2.0 S with its gold pinstripe and black vinyl roof. To be fair, the new Capri does have a certain individuality about it and there are hints of its heritage in the design. But let’s be honest – the era when cars like the Capri stood out for their truly adventurous shapes and daring personality is long behind us.
