The purpose of Drive it Day is quite simple : To raise awareness and support for the historic vehicle movement and keep heritage vehicles on the roads without restrictions.
Drive it Day was created by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs in 2005 to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial organised by the Automobile Club on April 23rd 1900 to prove that the motor car was a viable means of transport. 83 cars started from Grosvenor Place and eleven days later 35 intrepid crews returned to London having completed 1000 miles.
Of course , for those of us who work at Ambergate , every day is a Drive It Day with well over 200 Classic cars to look after …and of course drive!
However, this Sunday marks the official start of the Classic Car season and we anticipate a very busy day at The Great British Car Journey as Classic cars and their owners converge on the banks of the River Derwent.
The headline event will be “Longships and Octagons” celebrating the iconic MG and Rover brands which were the last cars produced at the Longbridge factory set up by Herbert Austin 120 years ago. Sadly, it is also now 20 years since the enterprise entered administration ending volume production for ever.
Many other clubs will be present on the day which as well as raising awareness and support for the continued unrestricted use of historic vehicles has also raised more than £177,000 for Childline in the last five years.
The weather forecast is lookin a lot better than last Sunday , so it’s time to get out the Classic and have some fun
