10 Years Since The Last Defender

10 Years Since The Last "Real" Land Rover

Yes , it really is ten years since the last “real” Land Rover , a short wheelbase (93”) Defender rolled off the production line in Birmingham. This marked the end of a 68 year production run and was the 2,016,933rd and last Classic , Iconic and Extraordinary British all terrain machine.

Great British Car Journey has a genuine soft (and possibly muddy) spot for such an amazing vehicle : a truly outstanding example of British engineering ingenuity. Apart from a pristine Series I we are also privileged to display the actual Landy driven by Brenda Blethyn in Vera.

Of course the proof of the pudding is in the Driving and we have a Land Rover for you to sample on our Drive Dad’s Car fleet and guess if Dad was a farmer in the last century, a Land Rover would almost certainly have featured as his Company Car. We also have a couple of super little Electric Land Rovers for the children to take a spin in.

Of course this was a basic machine and the extras list was not very long but for those of a certain age, a Land Rover complete with a real nodding Collie was a sign that you were in a rural area of our Green and Pleasant Land.
